The course aim is to learn how to design and then create original items of patchwork,quilting, applique and stitched textiles by hand and machine

  • Duration: This is a two year course of three terms per year
  • Fees: £215 per 10 week term for WI members, £235 per 10 week term for non members. The course at The Cosy Cabin is £325 per 10 week term. There is an additional one off Creative Stitch registration fee of £90 payable at start of first term

This replaces the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Patchwork & Quilting.

This course from Sept 2017 will take place each Monday in Ipswich 10.00-15:00 and in Risby each Tuesday 10.00 – 15.00 term-time only. It is also available as a Distance Learning course.

The course aim is to learn how to design and then create original items of patchwork,quilting, applique and stitched textiles by hand and machine

Term one – Landscapes and Seascapes

  • Design work on line and shape
  • Colouring fabric
  • Stitching techniques by hand and machine to include quilting, cording, trapunto and tied quilting
  • Assessment piece to make an original small stitched item on the theme e.g a bag, cushion or container

Term two – Flora and Fauna

  • Design work on colour and texture
  • Printing onto fabric
  • Stitched techniques using applique, edges and finishes and fuse effects
  • Assessment piece to design and make an original wall hanging

Term three – Ethnic studies

  • Design work inspired by educational visits
  • Design work based on studies into different ethnicities and cultural artefacts
  • Indigo dyeing and shibori resist
  • Stitched techniques such as Kantha, Sashiko, Boro and Pojagi
  • Assessment piece to make an item of clothing on the theme

Term four – Towns and Cities

  • Design work based on architecture or industry
  • Design using new technologies
  • Stitched techniques looking at a variety of patchwork methods including crazy, foundation, curved
  • Quilt construction
  • Assessment to make a small lap quilt

Term five – Textile Heritage

  • Research into historic British quilting
  • Design work based on traditional techniques
  • Stitched techniques on English patchwork, block patchwork, whole cloth quilting, hand quilting
  • Design work in preparation for Final Quilt

Term six – Putting it all together

  • Assessment to design and make a Final Quilt
  • Prepare for Graduate Show
