Advanced Stitched textiles (Patchwork and Quilting)

This course is offered as an alternative to the City & Guilds level 3 Diploma course in Patchwork and Quilting and will run in tandem with the final Diploma courses from 2017 – 2019. This course will replace the Diploma course from September 2018.

This is a follow-on course for students who have completed the Creative Patchwork and Quilting Course or the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Patchwork and Quilting.

  • Duration: This is a two year course of three terms per year
  • Fees: £215 per term for WI members, £235 per term for non members There is an additional one off Creative Stitch registration fee of £90 payable at start of first term

This course will run on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (6 sessions per term) 10.00-15:00 It is also available as a Distance Learning Course.

Term one

  • Design work based on your chosen theme including decorating papers, collage, pattern,
  • Surface Design including dyeing, painting, printing and resist techniques
  • Experimental stitch techniques including working with paper, plastics and working with soluble fabrics
  • Assessment required – looking at the work of a contemporary designer/maker

Term two

  • Design work on texture and shape on your chosen theme
  • Creating texture and shape in stitch
  • 3D work
  • Creating your own fabrics
  • Making beads and tassels
  • Paper making, silk paper and weaving
  • Assessment required – looking at the work of a second contemporary designer/maker

Term three

  • Fabric manipulation inc burning techniques
  • Image transfer
  • Surface design including indigo dyeing, screen printing and discharge techniques
  • Hand stitch techniques
  • Assessment required – looking at the work of a third contemporary designer/maker
  • Assessment required – to design and make a ‘set of items’ e.g. three bowls

Term four

  • Felt making
  • Embellishing
  • Working with metals, paper and plastics
  • Lamination and foiling
  • Working with spunbond fabrics
  • Silk painting
  • Assessment required – looking at the work of the final contemporary designer/maker
  • Assessment required – to design and make a piece of costume for a fantasy film set

Term five

  • Review and sampling of techniques relevant to final quilt
  • Assessment required – to create a set of design work for final quilt

Term six

  • Assessment required – to complete final quilt
