Creative Stitched Textiles at The Cosy Cabin

This course enables you to learn how to design and then make various items of stitched textile by use of machine and hand embroidery.

  • Duration: This is a two year course of three terms per year
  • Fees: £345 per term to include room hire at The Cosy Cabin.There is an additional one off registration fee of £90 payable on confirmation of your place.

This course takes place each Wednesday 10.00-15:00 term time only.

Term one – Landscapes and Seascapes

  • Design work on line and shape
  • Colouring fabric
  • Stitching techniques by hand and machine to include free machine embroidery, tension techniques, eyelets and working in a hoop
  • Assessment piece to design and make an original small stitched item on the theme e.g a bag, cushion or container

Term two – Flora and Fauna

  • Design work on colour and texture
  • Printing onto fabric
  • Stitched techniques using applique, plaques and cords, felt making and using an embellisher
  • Assessment piece to design and make an original piece of jewellery

Term three – Ethnic studies

  • Design work inspired by educational visits
  • Design work based on studies into different ethnicities and cultural artefacts
  • Indigo dyeing and shibori resist
  • Stitched techniques such as Kantha, Sashiko, Boro and Pojagi, tassel making and stitched collage
  • Assessment piece to design and make an item of clothing

Term four – Towns and Cities

  • Design work based on architecture or industry
  • Design using new technologies
  • Stitched techniques will include machine embroidery, working with plastics and paper, fuse effects, buttonholes and edges and finishes
  • Assessment piece to design and make a wall hanging

Term five – Textile Heritage

  • Research into historic British embroidery by both hand and machine
  • Research into contemporary designer makers
  • Stitched techniques will included cutting and slashing, making braids, shadow work and padded work
  • Assessment piece to design and make an item of clothing

Term six – Putting it all together

  • Assessment to design and make a final piece of your choice
  • Prepare for Graduate Show
