Advanced Stitched Textiles Ipswich

This is a follow-on course for students who have completed a Creative Patchwork and Quilting or Creative Stitched Textiles Course or the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Machine Embroidery or Patchwork and Quilting.
- Duration: This is a two year course of three terms per year
- Fees: £225 per term for WI members, £245 per term for non members There is an additional one off Creative Stitch registration fee of £90 payable on confirmation.

Term one Surface Design
- Design work based on your chosen theme including decorating papers, collage, pattern
- Surface Design including dyeing, painting, printing, discharge and resist techniques
- Assessment required – looking at the work of a contemporary designer/maker
- Start Portfolio of experimental samples
Term two Mixed media
- Working with paper, plastics and metals Design work on texture and shape on your chosen theme
- Machine Embroidery experimental techniques
- Using Solubles
- Creating your own fabrics
- Continue to grow portfolio of samples
- Continue to progress design work
- Assessment – look at the work of a second contemporary designer/maker
Term three Fabric Manipulation and Natural techniques
- Fabric manipulation inc shrinking
- Burning techniques
- Constructed fabrics inc stiffening
- 3D work
- Natural Dyeing
- Eco printing
- Sun printing
- Continue to work on portfolio of experimental samples
- Assessment required – looking at the work of a third contemporary designer/maker
- Assessment required – to design and make a ‘set of items’ e.g. three bowls
Term four Creating fabrics
- Wet felt making
- Dry felting and embellishing
- Acid dyeing
- Lamination and foiling
- Working with spunbond fabrics
- Paper making
- Working with leather
- Assessment required – looking at the work of the final contemporary designer/maker
- Assessment required – to design and make a piece of costume for a fantasy film set
Term five Using technology and embellishments
- Embellishments including bead makin
- Desing using technology
- Designing own fabric to be printed
- Review and sampling of techniques relevant to final quilt (APQ) or wallhanging (AST)
- Assessment required – to create a set of design work for final quilt (APQ)
- Assessment required – wallhanging (AST)
Term six Final Assessments
- Assessment required – to complete final quilt (APQ)
- Assessment required – to make a framed piece (AST)
